Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Old Town of Dubrovnik is also known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic.”  On the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia, its most recent claim to fame is being a filming location for Game of Thrones.

You don’t have to be a GoT fan to enjoy the rich culture of the city and these 5 must-see locations.

1. The Jesuit Stairs

These famous Baroque stairs appeared in season five of the series during the infamous 'Walk of Shame' scene. The iconic scene catapulted the location's popularity and has become a popular landmark.

Located on the south side of Gundulic Square, if you walk up the stairs, you will be on Uz Jezuite Street where Jesuit Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and 17th-century Jesuit College are situated. The view from the top provides a splendid view of the city.

If you happen to be there when the tower clock strikes noon, you may be treated to a scene reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, as pigeons gather here to eat the grain offered to them each day at the same hour.

2. Fortress Lovrijenac

Dubbed Dubrovnik’s Gibraltar, this fortress was built in the 11th century to protect the city from a Venetian attack.

The interior was used for filming the halls of the 'Red Keep' while the exterior captures Blackwater Bay.

Visitors are welcome to navigate the fort and experience the ancient history that lies within.

3. City Walls

No visit to Dubrovnik is complete without a walk around the spectacular city walls that encircle its historic core. These amazing walls were one of the deciding factors with producers when selecting Dubrovnik as a filming location for GoT.

Countless scenes feature the Medieval style walls, including some near the Narrow Sea and many private walks taken on the show.

Tickets to walk the walls can be bought in advance or on site. Allow 1.5-2 hours to take in everything on the 2 km walk.

4. Trsteno Arboretum

This site is a major filming location, known as the Kings Landing and Red Keep's Garden on the show.

Located 14 km northwest of Dubrovnik, it is one of the oldest arboretums in the world. Built by nobles in the late 15th century, the park is stunning and encapsulates the privacy that was represented in the series.

5. Island of Lokrum

This island is a 10-minute ferry ride from the city and home to the famous 'Iron Throne'. The throne was gifted to Dubrovnik by HBO and is free to sit on for photos.

Other GoT points of interest in Lokrum include the botanical gardens featured in the city of Qarth as well as the former Benedictine monastery.

Culture and history for everyone

For ardent fans, the essence of Game of Thrones is everywhere in Dubrovnik. As you walk the streets, you will surely recognize details and signature scenes from the series. For those unfamiliar with the series, the rich history and culture are sure to captivate you.
